[Today I Learned] Non-Inverter vs Inverter Air-Conditioner - Allco Parts Supply (M) Sdn. Bhd.

[Today I Learned] Non-Inverter vs Inverter Air-Conditioner

18-Feb-2025

In Malaysia, air conditioners are commonly categorized into two types: inverter and non-inverter. Understanding the differences between these types are essential for making informed decisions regarding energy efficiency, cost, and environmental impact.

The main disctinction between an Inverter and Non-Inverter Airconditioner is the approach to temperature adjustment.

Inverter Air Conditioners:

(SLEMA Journal, Volume 20, September 2017)

With inverter air conditioners, temperature is adjusted by changing motor speed without turning the motor ON and OFF.

Inverter air conditioners utilize a variable speed compressor that adjusts its speed to maintain the desired room temperature. This continuous operation leads to several advantages:

  • Energy Efficiency: By changing compressor speed, inverter units consume less power, resulting in significant energy savings. Research shows that when operated for 8 hours across 6-weeks, inverters can save up to 35% of energy compared to non-inverters.

  • Consistent Comfort: These units provide stable cooling without the temperature fluctuations common in non-inverter models.

  • Quieter Operation: The compressor's variable speed operation reduces noise levels

Non-Inverter Air Conditioners:

(SLEMA Journal, Volume 20, September 2017)

Motor speed in non-inverter type air conditioners remains constant and temperature is adjusted by turning the motor ON and OFF, which consumes more energy.

While they are generally less expensive upfront, they have certain disadvantages:

  • Higher Energy Consumption: The constant starting and stopping of the compressor leads to increased energy usage.

  • Temperature Fluctuations: The on/off cycling can cause noticeable temperature variations, affecting comfort.

  • Increased Noise: The compressor's operation tends to be noisier compared to inverter models.

Malaysia's Policy on Air Conditioner Efficiency:

Malaysia has implemented policies to promote energy efficiency in appliances, including air conditioners:

  • Energy Labeling: The Energy Commission of Malaysia mandates that air conditioners display energy efficiency labels ie. Inverter A/Cs are usually awarded 4-5 stars shown on their labels, allowing consumers to make informed choices based on energy consumption.

  • Incentives for Energy-Efficient Products: There are initiatives to encourage the adoption of energy-efficient appliances, which may include rebates or tax incentives for purchasing inverter air conditioners.

In summary, while non-inverter air conditioners may have a lower initial cost, inverter units offer superior energy efficiency which translates to a more economical decision in the long run, consistent comfort, and quieter operation. Considering Malaysia's policies and the long-term benefits, opting for an inverter air conditioner is a prudent choice for both economic and environmental reasons.
